Warning people about a wave of opportunistic hacking attempts linked to the IT outage.

Following the IT CrowdStrike outage over the weekend businesses and consumers are being warned to lookout for scams using this as a vehicle.

Nobody is immune from fraud. The criminals behind it target people online and in their homes, often emotionally manipulating their victims before they steal money or personal data.

 

But there is something we can do. By staying vigilant and always taking a moment to stop, think and check whenever we’re approached, we can help to protect ourselves and each other from fraud.

 

The more you know, the better prepared you’ll be to spot a fraud attempt if it happens to you or someone you know.

  • break contact if needed
  • tell family and friends to make them aware

    How to report fraud

    Report to Action Fraud

    Action Fraud is the reporting centre for fraud and cyber crime in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. If you’ve been scammed, defrauded or experienced cyber crime, report it to Action Fraud online or by calling 0300 123 2040.

    Tell your bank

    If you’ve lost money or you think a fraudster has access to your bank account, tell your bank or payment service provider as soon as possible, so they can protect your account and help you get your money back.

    Always contact them directly using a known email or phone number, such as the ones shown on their website or the back of your card, or call 159.

     

    Nobody should feel embarrassed about reporting fraud. Fraudsters will use any means they can to convince people to hand over their hard-earned money. This means anybody is at risk of becoming a victim.
     

    The more we know, the better we can help
    That’s why it’s essential that you make a report whenever you experience fraud, so we can learn as much as we can about this crime and how to reduce it.

    Reporting fraud helps identify and stop fraudsters and, ultimately, prevent other people from being targeted.

    24% of people say they’re not very likely to report fraud in the UK*, but with your help, we can fight back and make it harder for the criminals.
