Identity theft is when your personal details are stolen and identity fraud is when those details are used to commit fraud. Your details can be obtained from letters or bank statements that you have thrown away, or information stolen from your computer.
You can stay safe by being wary of unsolicited calls, emails or texts that claim to be from your bank, especially if they ask for passwords, or your date of birth. Review your bank statements for any suspicious activity. Make sure you dispose of private documents completely – for example by shredding or burning them.
Cifas offer protective registration to people who have fallen victim to, or are at risk of ID fraud. Find out more: www.cifas.org.uk
