Cold call fraud attempt in Boston |
A resident from the Boston area received a call yesterday (17 August) from a man claiming to be DCI Barnett of the Met police Cyber Crime Unit. He said his badge number was 0921773 and gave a crime reference number.
Thankfully the resident spotted this as a fraud attempt. But we know that the people who make these calls are very convincing, and use various tactics to bamboozle victims into doing what they ask. In this case there was an elaborate story about a fraud investigation and “DCI Barnett” said that there would be a follow up call from the Financial Services Authority.
Please remember that Police, banks or other officials will NEVER call and ask you to transfer money, or send a courier to your home to collect bank cards, cash or other valuables.
